Physical Therapy FAQ

Answers before your first visit

What is physical therapy?

Physical therapy is a healthcare specialty that helps relieve pain, improve function, and support healing through exercise, manual therapy, modalities, and patient education.

How does physical therapy help with pain?

A physical therapist can use manual therapy, movement retraining, strengthening, flexibility work, education, and at-home exercises to reduce pain and improve function.

How many visits will I need?

Every case is different, but the current site notes that a general average is about 12 physical therapy visits.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring your insurance card, personal identification, relevant medical records or imaging reports, and comfortable clothing that allows the injured area to be examined.

Do I need a referral?

A referral is not always necessary for physical therapy. If you have been given a referral, bring it with you, and check your insurance plan for any requirements.
